Project Overview

This project is exploring the impact of structural, public and self stigma in relation to sport-related injuries, specifically those acquired by athletes who menstruate, as there is a known increased risk of injury during menstruation. The project hopes to discuss and raise awareness of stigma facing female athletes through creative arts practice.

This project hopes to answer the following questions and aims:

Research Question:
Do creative encounters with sports-related injuries, specifically those obtained during the menstrual cycle, promote more inclusive dialogue and understanding and aid in reducing stigma.

Aims:
• Using photovoice, asking athletes to document their own social experiences as female athletes, plus injuries sustained and during menstruation.
• Develop an exhibition using photovoice outcomes that raises awareness of menstruation-related sports injuries and social stigmas affecting female athletes.

Participants

• Athletes (individual or team sports players) at LJMU, local northwest athletes or national athletes, for example lacrosse, rugby, netball etc./manager.
• Adults over 18 years old
• People who menstruate
• People on contraception

'Another Angle: A photovoice method for discussing the social impacts of sports injury by female athletes' is a new project that features a series of photographs highlighting the stories of athletes. Through the visual medium of photography, this project explores how images can speak volumes about the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of athletes in various sports. This collection of photographs aims to showcase the powerful narratives that can be told through visual storytelling.
